Meet Patricia

Justice Alvarez was first elected to Place 3 on the Fourth Court of Appeals in 2012 and quickly established a reputation as a knowledgeable, fair and honest jurist who decides cases based on the law, not politics.

She is a graduate of UTSA and the University of Texas School of Law. Before her election to the Court, Alvarez spent 25 years in private practice, building a wealth of experience in complex civil trial matters at the state and federal levels. She is board certified in personal injury trial law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.

She earned her BBA from the University of Texas at San Antonio and her Juris Doctor from the University of Texas at Austin. Justice Alvarez has previously earned a Martindale-Hubbell "AV Preeminent" peer review rating. She is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, the United States Courts of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit and the District of Columbia Circuit, in all federal District Courts in Texas.

Justice Alvarez sat on the American Board of Trial Advocates (2009-2012) and is a member of the State Bar of Texas. She served as Vice President of the Texas Texas Association of Defense Counsel Board (2008-2011), as President of the Mexican American Bar Association (2008-2009), on the Texas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees (2005-2008), as Texas Bar Director (2002-2005) and as Panel Chair of Texas Bar Association Grievance Committee. She was a member of the Class of 2008 of Leadership Texas.

Justice Alvarez is also a member of the UTSA Advisory Council on Public Policy, the San Antonio Rotary Club, Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. She has one son and five grandchildren.

About the Fourth Court of Appeals

The Fourth Court of Appeals consists of seven elected Justices serving thirty-two counties across South Texas and the Hill Country. It has intermediate appellate jurisdiction of both civil and criminal cases appealed from lower courts and is the last level of appeal before the Texas Supreme Court in civil cases and the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals in criminal cases.

The thirty-two counties served by the Fourth Court of Appeals are: Atascosa, Bandera, Bexar, Brooks, Dimmit, Duval, Edwards, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Jim Hogg, Jim Wells, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Kimble, Kinney, La Salle, Mason, Maverick, McMullen, Medina, Menard, Real, Starr, Sutton, Uvalde, Val Verde, Webb, Wilson, Zapata and Zavala.
